M220 M6di fuel filter replacement

The fuel filter housing is mounted too low to be able to slide it off the filter without popping the filter off at the same time. This causes some of the gas to spill. The only other thing I can think of is to remove it from the bracket to get a little wiggle room, but I don't want to mess up the fuel lines. Anyone have any suggestions for next time?
