'03 Malibu Response Trans Grinding/ Smoking

Recommended Posts

Our '03 Response LX was running totally fine until until one day it started making an awful gear grinding noise when clicked into neutral/ reverse. No noise in forward gear & still ran properly, so kept going forward straight to take it out of the water. Clicked in reverse to stop for a couple seconds- no movement backwards, gear grinding noise and white smoke coming from the engine. Shut it off and pulled it and now waiting for the lake to unfreeze to have our dealer look at it ASAP. Any ideas as to what this could be and what it will cost to fix?

When was the last time you change the transmission oil, and how did it look?  How does the oil look now?

check both cable ends for worn linkages.  It's possible the cable is not adjusted properly to give enough "throw" to the gear actuator on the transmission.

Though usually, that's not grinding.  You'll just hear a whine as surfaces aren't mated properly.  Grinding and smoke doesn't sound promising... Good luck!

Thanks! Maybe helpful to note that when clicking into neutral/ reverse, the grinding sounds happens for about 2 seconds and then stops. Wish it would let me post the video I have on here.

Oil regularly changed, red color, at the proper level. Doesn’t seem to be the issue.

I'm only seeing a 3 second video.

It's short, but shows the grinding noise fully. Didn't want to do it more than I needed to.

The entire pinion Carrier is locked and rotating when in forward, the inner gears only rotate when in reverse.  Transmission gear noise will not happen in forward because the transmission gears
only spin in reverse.  The most common cause of grinding noise when in reverse is caused by damaged gears.
