Prevent overflow of gas when filling up

2004 Malibu Wakesetter VLX. Boat is new to me this season. Seems that every time I fill it up, the fuel nozzle fails to automatically stop when the tank is full, resulting in a bunch of gas blowing back onto my boat and my trailer (I use ethanol free 87 octane).

What am I missing? I usually fill on the starboard side, which does not have the small venting port. Is there a trick, or do I simply have to guess when the boat is mostly full, and then stop pumping?

Thanks!

Do you have a fill hole on both sides of the boat? I remember opening both sides while filling prevented it on one of our malibus.

My bayliner used to do that.  I would just not lock the pump and listen to the fuel.  You could hear when it was filling up the tube and could stop and give it a moment.

In my '06 lsv I always took the back middle seat cushion off to be able to see the fuel tank while filling.  I would also listen as oldjeep says.

in my 06, I had a station that had a small concrete pad and it allowed me to drop the opposite tires off to give a better angle (couple inches is all it took), but I still needed to pump slowly!  Maybe try parking on a 2x4?

Doesn't work . I have one installed, no difference. The only thing that works like others have said is fill slow and listen.
