Replacing the Oil Level (not pressure) Sensor Questions

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

my 2010 23LSV with an Indmar 8.1L is giving me an SPN 707 FMI 3 error about 20-30 seconds after the boat is started.  The code points to the Oil Level (not pressure) Sensor.  I've found it on the port side of the oil pan and I've checked the wiring going to it and it all looks fine/intact.  And the actual oil level is fine.   So I'm thinking the sensor has gone bad.  Does anyone have any experience replacing one of these on this engine?  Does it just screw out/in?   Anyone happen to have a good part #?  I'm hoping like hell this can be replaced without removing the oil pan.

Thanks, Roger

Hi All,

for those that may run into this, this is the GM part # for the Oil Level Sensor for a Vortec 8.1.   It's on the port side of the oil pan, just above and a little behind the oil change/drain hose.  It requires a 1 1/8" wrench or socket to remove it.   Obviously, make sure you drain your oil before you attempt to replace this or you'll end up with the majority of your oil in your bilge area.   Make sure the old o-ring comes off and be VERY careful that you thread the new one in correctly.   The part is plastic so the threads are easily damaged if not threaded in correctly.  It took me about 10 minutes to get it to thread in correctly.  Do it by hand initially.  When it's not threading correctly, it will bind/stop about the 2nd or 3rd turn of your wrist.   When it is going in correctly, you can do it by hand for the first 10-15 turns of your wrist (and then you can transition to your wrench/socket).

Hope this helps.
