2001 Malibu Response Complete Parts List

Hello first time Malibu owner. Thought “ I would have loved all this info in one place” when I started this build so here it goes.

We had wanted a Response for awhile and were saving up, but when our little jet boat broke we decided to take what we had and go after one we had seen on marketplace that needed work instead of taking the time and paying someone market value.

We found an original owner 01 LX with a cracked block for 7k offered 4k and they accepted. It was a 10 hour drive one way so me and the wife left after work on a Friday and got back Saturday with our new boat.

The first week was research, the second was waiting on deliveries and engine removal, and the third was installing. We made it out on the water with no interior for shake down 4 weeks to the day that we got it home.

There are so many good resources on here for what I did but I thought I'd put a complete list of parts together in one place. I’m not sure what all years this will be good for but my boat is a 2001 Mailibu Response LX with the port full injected 5.7l

the long block

this came with a gasket set including the intake and exhaust, but not the correct valve cover gaskets. it also had the front timing cover with the hole for the crank sensor. i machined my own plug for this. but you could swap out covers. the oil pan drain was a different thread than my drain hose so also machined a fitting to use my drain hose. you could also swap oil pans. also has the hole drilled for a mechanical fuel pump so it requires the block off plate.

fuel injectors

took the most time to research. tried sending them out for cleaning and that cost $130 to tell me they were shot. i never found a good post lots of recommendations and part numbers and its how i found these but they never came back to the post and said the ones they got work perfect. so with out further ado these are direct replacement and worked perfectly lol.

fuel pump

originally purchased the quantum pump but it was dead on arrival. then learned about the vapor lock issues. so i decided to move the pump to the transom and switch to AN fittings and lines.

all in all it went very well. We would have made it out on the water after 3 weeks, but once everything was together and on the fake-a-lake for first start up, the fuel pump from quantum was bad and set me back a week. we took the boat out with no interior for the first shake down and set the drip on the packing nut and boated around for 3 hours. only problem was dead gauges. got it home tore the back off the module and reflowed the solder they now work just fine. installed all the interior pieces and have been out on it the last 4 weekends in a row. no problems and everything seems to be just fine. just over 11k after purchasing the boat and all the parts.

Hope this helps someone else get out on the water quicker. Feel free to add links to other parts I didn't change out.

Great post!  @Ronnie or other admins, can we somehow glom this together with the other parts list posts for these older boats we have floating around?

@TOREBACK post some pics of the boat!

Great info!!

How about we Pin it and it stays at the top. If there is another post you think it would be better attached to, link it here.

This one has been handy for me a few times in the past also.

Ya thanks guys. Glad to contribute if it can help someone out.

@UWSkier I edited the post and added a link to a photo album.

Interesting pump/filter setup!  I dig it!  I didn't relocate my pump when I replaced it a couple years ago as I've not experienced the vapor lock issue.  Build looks clean!

I really wish there was better structure for this site.  There must be a better way to categorize stuff per generation or chassis number of I dont know.   You dont see that kinda of one size bucket fit for all forum categorization in the automotive world.
