383 Hammerhead rebuild parts

Recommended Posts

Hello all, Ive tried searching and cant find any detailed information on rebuilding a 383 Hammerhead motor. Does anyone have any experience they can share. I plan on replacing oil pan gasket, water pump gaskets, thermostat gaskets, intake gasket, intake plenum gasket, exhaust to cylinder head gasket, drive/flex plate, head gasket, valve cover gaskets, etxcat re-plumb kit.  If anyone has anything else I should change please let me know.

The information that i cant find is on the internals, Does anyone have information they can share on part numbers or clearances for rod bearings, main bearings, thrust bearings, piston ring replacement.

Gaskets will be small block Chevrolet, just make sure you get marine specific head gaskets (stainless combustion ring) and ones for correct bore size.  Cat plumbing will be specific to the brand of manifold and in reality, a good auto parts store should be able to come up with hoses.  Exh manifold gaskets are Chevy, port size will identify specific part number.

The early Hammerheads were a Callaway build, yours should simply be a standard GM 383 small block assembly with Indmar ancillaries added.  Indmar should be able to tell you specifically which SBC is the lump.  Probably your biggest external clue will be whether you have cast iron or aluminum (probably Fast Burn) cylinder heads.   There is a lot of small block Chevy / GM rebuild information available from numerous sources along with helpful info on marine v automotive clearance suggestions to guide you.  You can do a lot of part searching on Summitt Performance and/or Jegs.
