2013 Wakesetter MXZ 22 thermostat housing

All - I am looking to buy a replacement thermostat housing.  The internal threads are stripped, I found out the hard way when it burst open and could tell someone had epoxied it.  I have searched SkiDim, Bakes etc and cannot locate the part.  See the pic, I may be wrong, is this the thermostat housing?

Also inlcuded a couple of pics that I am not sure what they are called but I can tell you that they overheated and burned the paint off.

I was able to put the elbow back in by wedging it in and went in limp mode back to the lakehouse.  Once i got to the dock I realized that the paint had burned and was very hot.  Can anyone tell me why you think this happend.

I am going to replace the impeller too just to be safe.

Thanks in advance,

Robert

The thermostat housing is Indmar part # 531098E.  You should be able to order it from any Indmar dealer.

You can get all of the parts you will need individually, or you may want to consider just getting the Indmar L96 water flow kit # 495181V which includes the tstat, housing, hoses, and elbow fittings you may need for the repair.

The kit was a cooling system update that changes 2012 cooling systems to be like your 2013 cooling system.  By 2013, the L96 cooling systems had the newer tstat housing.  The threads on the elbows should be coated with something like Permatex 59214/59235 high temp thread sealant.

FYI, in cases where the large plastic threaded elbow continously comes loose from the thermostat housing, I have found that replacing the tubular metal hose between the sea pump and tstat plastic elbow with a single piece of 1-1/4 ID wire reinforced hose can help reduce vibration on the elbow and threads.  It is the same kind of hose that goes from the hull intake to the sea pump.

Good call on the 1-1/4 ID wire reinforced hose.  The kit is coming with one for the front side of the intake, I will get another, along with the Permatex sealant.  Really appreciate your input.

Those are your CATS, manifolds. If they overheated and are damaged the O2 censors (located on the top) will detect faulty reading and you would get "Service required" warning and active engine fault codes on your maliview.

Thanks for letting me know what those are.  The previous owner said he had gotten "Service Required" and a O2 sensor was replaced.  I had gotten a service required warning when all this went bad, actually I had recieved serval, but ignored them, bad idea.  I am not a mechanic, but I have worked on the three Malibus I have owned over the past 15 years with help from Malibu Crew.  Would Malibu need to replace the sensors or is this something I can do?  It appears there are four and after the CATS overheating I would prefer to replace them all. If so, would you happnen to know the part number(s) I would need to order?

Really appreciate your responding and letting me know what I was dealing with.

Hi Robert,

sorry for late reply. Unfortunately I do not have the part number for these censors but the thing is if your CATS are damage they will get the censors dirty which is why you would get the "Service required" warning. When you check your Active Engine fault codes they will only be related to the censors (i.e. SPN 66020 FM1:8 ABNORMAL FREQUENCY OR PULSE WIDTH), that doesn't specifically mean the censors are bad, they could simply just need to be cleaned. The problem could be the CATS. You should bring the boat in and have the CATS inspected, they perform this with a camera inside. I know all of this as I am dealing with it myself; had service warnings, got the CATS checked and was told they were very dirty but still ok, dealer replaced all censors ($800 later, but I bet it's more these days....), no service warnings for a few outings but they came back. Now replacing both CATS.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Hey no worries,

Appreciate all of your input.  After a bit more investiagtion I decided to go ahead and buy all four new sensors.  I have a feeling I will be replacing both CATS too, but before I do I am going to inspect them and put on the new sensors.  Hopefully when I crank her up I can check for the sensor Active Engine Fault codes and not see (i.e. SPN 66020 FM1:8 ABNORMAL FREQUENCY OR PULSE WIDTH).  Or see my cats getting really hot as they did when all went bad on the lake.  Will post again once we do the work.  Hoping to do it this week.

Best,
Robert

Was able to replace all four O2 sensors, checked the CATS with a camera and they were clean and in good shape.  Put it back on the water, ran cool, yet the "Service Required" came back on.  I read that in order for the alarm to clear, the engine will need to complete three warm up cycles from 90 to 150 degrees.  Also, I noticed you have a 2013 MXZ as i do; however, I do not have an Active Engine Fault on my Maliview screen?  Could it be that I have old software and need to update?  Curious if you know what version you have on your boat.

Thanks again!

Yes 3 warm up cycles should reset it, sorry don't have the software update info on hand. Sometimes the Active engine fault won't be showing so I would try the the 3 warm up cycles, also perhaps reset to factory settings on the Maliview.

Got one warm up cycle behind me, so two more to go, will update.  Good call on reset settings to factory on Maliview too.

Well after 3 warm up cycles I was still getting the "Service Required" and my CATS were getting hot again.  Took it into Texas Malibu and they reset the settings to inactive ran it in the shop and no alarm and told me it was ready for the lake.  Went out and as soon as I put a load on it, pulling a rider, the service alarm went off.  Took it back to Malibu, this time they tested in the shop and did a lake test.  Said the two front bank O2 sensors had fouled, which I let them know I had just replaced all four myself.  Indmar specialist said that the previous owner likely did not run it hard or put it under load much, causing carbon soot build up to fould the sensors.  Malibu ran it hard under load for 30 minutes on the lake.  I have now ran it 4 times on the lake all tanks full, wedge down and surfgate out.  No problems.  Thanks for all the input!
