'98 Sunsetter no start...wiring or ECM?

Recommended Posts

Here's the background: Its a '98 Sunsetter LX with the Monsoon.  Started the boat up after sitting for about a month yesterday, ran it for 10-20 minutes, then shut it off, and haven't been able to start with the key since then.

Using the key or jumping terminals on the back of the ignition cylinder produces a click near the soleniod, however it fired right up by shorting terminals on the solenoid.

Has anyone else experienced this?  15A fuses behind the engine are all good.

Thanks

if it started right up shorting the solenoid, it sounds like you found your answer.  Starters do go bad sometimes.

Rebuild or replace the starter

IMHO it would not be worth rebuilding a 1998 starter.   DBElectrical  is you friend.

Luckily enough for me, it *was* worth rebuilding a 1999 starter.  Honestly, the primary thing is to clean the carbon dust out of the commutator.

Yes, well you are special :)  - but for the average Qualified Captain  a new starter is likely the best way to go.  YMMV

Some folks pay MSRP for Malibu accessories; some do not.  Some folks buy a ginormous dock, I do not, but build my own.  I've got my original starter and when it dies, I'll FedEx one frm DB:  others will rebuild it.

The local starter shop thinks the starter isn't the issue, and i may not be getting enough voltage to the starter.  Does anyone know what voltage I should be seeing on the two posts of the starter?
