Help with installing depth finder

I have a 2004 WS 23 LSV, and I bought it used. It did not come with a depth finder. So I ordered a depth finder from the dealer, and I want to install it myself. It has essentially 2 parts; the module that plugs in under the dash, and the transducer. I got the transducer that requires me to drill a hole in the boat, thinking that it would be more accurate and reliable than the type that glues to the bottom of the bilge. I would like to know from those of you that have a factory depth finder, where did the factory install the transducer? It seems that it would be ideal to have it near the back, facing straight down, isolated from turbulent water flow, not over the driveshaft/prop/rudder.

i have the factory installed tranducer on my response, and it is actually in the middle of the hull. it is about 6" off center on the port side, in line with the center plug. I know its not the same hull, but at least its a reference point.

Thanks for the info. I went and looked tonight; it looks like there are a couple places in the rear compartment near the paddle wheel and rear raw water and ballast intakes, but I think the best place will end up being up in the middle of the boat where the center drain plug and front ballast intake ports are. There is enough space there and I should be able to easily mount the transducer in a location that will be free of turbulence produced my nearby pieces protruding from the bottom of the boat. My only concern there is whether or not that part of the bottom of the boat will ever lift out of the water and cause the transducer to lose a reading.

Mine is about 9" off center and about infront of a line with the center drain. As long as it is even with, or slightly behind the tracking fins you should be OK. Maybe someone with your same boat can give you exact an exact location.

Mine is mounted with the rear of the transducer flush with the hull and the front of the transducer a bit recessed (like a 1/16" at max) so that it shoots slightly forward. I have read that pointing it a bit forward will give you better performance at speed.

Remember to measure at least twice and cut one time. :)
