Hard wired USB port for power

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with hard wiring a USB port for power only?  I have a wireless charging windshield mount for a phone at my helm.  It is currently powered by a usb cable to a 12v “cigarette lighter” adaptor below the throttle.  I have 2 issues:  the connections come loose fairly often and it looks sloppy.

is there a way to splice into the cable and hard wire this to another 12 v source under the dash?  I appreciate any ideas.

I've removed my "cigarette lighter" receptacle and replaced with one of these: https://www.amazon.com/YonHan-Charger-Waterproof-Aluminum-Voltmeter/dp/B07FXH5ZZK/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3C2QW877N0JKM&dchild=1&keywords=12v+usb+outlet&qid=1593782502&sprefix=12v+usb%2Caps%2C226&sr=8-3. It's like a 20 minute project, real easy.

If you want something you could "hide" under the dash, you could take something like this and snip off the cig plug male and (fuse it, of course) and then tap into the cig outlet power and ground: https://www.amazon.com/Jelly-Comb-Multi-Port-Identification-Certified/dp/B0141Y4IRG/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=12v+usb+hub&qid=1593782639&sr=8-5

Thanks - That is a better option than I have now.  Comes in Red to match the gell accents, so I can tell my wife it is a cosmetic upgrade too!

I changed out all my cig lighter ports and replaced them with USB ports. I installed a wireless charger at the helm and plugged into a 3.0 USB port I can run music and other apps and the phone will still charge instead of just maintaining the power output (Samsung galaxy Note 9)
