99' Malibu Response 732 hours, 320 hp 350 blue monsoon

99' Malibu has been running great since 2015, started it up to go skiing and 2 minutes later in idle it sputtered, sounded like the starter was trying to engage again.

tried to turn the engine off but the key would not power down. Quick put the tranny in gear briefly to slow down the engine and turned off the key and it finally shut down.

smelt like wire insulation  burning near the starter.

Later after everything cooled down I started the engine to drive quickly up on the trailer and it started, drove, and shut down fine.

back in 15' replaced the starter, solenoid, ignition switch, and slave solenoid (hidden behind the engine on the underside of the mother board)  and it's worked fine til now.

what would you suggest for the next step?

Tnx. in advance.

Woodski

Sounds like perhaps a short in the system, perhaps the ignition switch is faulty.

I had an ignition switch get “stuck” on. ‘99.   Starter motor would run continuous in idle but stop when in gear.  Turned out the key was actually in upside down (and it still worked :dontknow:).  Took me longer that I’m proud of to figure it out.

Holy!  My kid did that - I thought it was an isolated case.  Thankfully no starter damage.
