Where to add sea strainer

Recommended Posts

Argonaut

I’m thinking of adding the Indmar sea strainer to my 2008 Wakesetter with monsoon 340..

if I am following the hose correctly it looks like from the sea c*** the hose goes straight up and then turns a sharp U back down into the v drive cooler then out the v drive to the raw water pump and into the engine ...

ive highted in green the first sharp U after the sea c*** and where I assume is the best place for me to cut and splice in the strainer?

i have not seen the takeoff yet for the boats heater core but I suspect it’s nearby ... I’m thinking of getting a shop manual to help trace these sorts of things...

I tried to add a sea strainer just before it goes into the vdrive where you are pointing at in the pic.  Just to get one in there and not have the strainer installed upside down was almost impossible.  When I tried I had like four 90 degree angles and I have a thread on it somewhere if you want to search.  All of the 90's that I made I think caused some slowness to the cooling system and mine fluctuated on temp more than I liked.  I moved mine to the back port side JUST before going into the impeller housing.  I may not be straining before Vdrive, but I'm still trapping tons of crap before it hits the impeller housing.  It works for me.

Thanks for your reply hawaiistyln. Do you get to it from the side compartment or how do you reach it?

Also, I realize you have already done yours ... I was thinking of using the Indmar version that has one 90 built in.. still leaves one sharp turn left though...

Yah I know the one you are talking about, but I decided to go with this one instead.  Good question about accessing it.  Unfortunately to access mine I have to remove the port side engine panel which really only takes a few seconds.  Once I do that I have a lot of room underneath the engine on port rear side.  I like it being there as it's not crammed in and all I had to do was cut 4"-ish out of the existing mfg intake hose.  I found mine cheaper on amazon:

Do you know the diameter of the raw water line coming in from the bottom of the boat?   On the 2003 response I don't know if it's a 1 or a 1.25 and am not near the boat.

I emailed Indmar this same question for my 2000 VLX and they sent me this picture.

The 90 degree fitting can be rotated in any direction.

Inboardonline.com currently has the best price I’ve seen them.

They also make a straight one which I didn’t realize until after I bought the one with the 90 degree.

Very nice. I have ordered one through Bakes (a little more however they are Local).

The picture is perfect. The next time I haul it out on the trailer I will add it on.

On my older wooden boat I had a Racor marine water separator... does anyone add or find that useful for these boats?
