Trailer Winch Broke

Recommended Posts

DAI

The winch on my Boatmate trailer (Fulton winch) broke today when pulling the boat out of the water.  When cranking the boat up, the boat was about an inch and a half from the rubber bow stop, and it felt like the teeth started slipping.  Luckily I started carrying a heavy duty rachet strap with since the bow strap on the winch broke last year, so I made it the 40 minute drive with too much bounce.  Looks like it's covered under the trailer warranty still.  But has anyone ever have this happen?  Common on a boat that's 4 years old?

Not common.  My 16 year old still works just fine.

Wonder if one of the nuts loose?  I will say that after taking mine apart to replace the strap I broke a couple weeks ago that the winches are not exactly the heaviest built things in the world.  Luckily Boatmate/fulton has been really good about replacing their broken pieces on my trailer (not the strap, but 2 different tongue jacks)

Boatmate is awesome, replaced my Trailer jack twice free no questions asked with next day shipping both times, had a problem with a spare hub and arm not arriving before trip and they over nighted it to me

ought to see how nice their painted galvanized trailers are

Anyone else feel like the Jack's and the winches on these boats are under sized? Especially the newer heavier boats.  I have a tough ramp (its steep) and my brand new winch is bent from cranking (same winch as my old 1000lbs. Lighter boat).  I should have shortened the strap because It helps but I think I'm going to replace it with a 2 speed anyway.  I'm sure my jack is fine but it really seems wobbly and I have a wood stand i put under the tongue to reduce the load if I'm working in the boat.

I abuse my jack pretty bad using it like a fifth wheel and I turn its wheel to allow me to push boat in on a slight angle snd by the time it’s far back it’s very covered by the driveway carport attached to house even though it’s open on one side, it allows me to turn the boat pushing by hand

i have a neighbors concrete retaining wall next to my driveway snd I risk screwing up trying to do this with truck , even if i didn’t hit it trying to turn boat I could scrap doors opening them if I’m not perfect, so I push it in on a very flat driveway , pull it out by hand using wheel in jack to turn it as I pull it,

shoukd have seen this routine with my crutches with my broken leg , pulled it out 30 days after surgery walking with crutches and one good leg.  I would sit on tongue and push with my good leg while I pulled with my arms and upper body, pushing it back in with one crutch and one good leg was hard , I didn’t want my batteries to take a hit and I wanted to start it once a month fit it’s  boating health , got easier at 4 months with no crutches except I had to push with the broken leg

it kept me stoked for future after I healed

Fully agree.  There is part of me thinking I should just pay the $100 out of my pocket for the bigger 2 speed.

Finally was able to get around to getting the old winch off and the new one on.  Here is a pic of the old one.  Looks like a handful of teeth on the gear folded over.

Looks like something came loose and the whole spool cocked judging by the track marks on the side of the spool.

Friday I installed a Fulton F2 3200lb 2 speed winch and was able to try it out on Saturday.  Wow, my 11 year old daughter could have got the boat all the way on the trailer with this thing.

It's not a big deal at most of the launches we use but up at my parents cabin it's going to be a game changer. Hopefully it lasts...
