a)it is located under the arm-rest by the throttle. there are no screws or anything. can I just pull it out with some force?

b) will any regular car-stereo fit/work? currently there is some old pioneer, looking to replace with a newer pioneer (to avoid connector/cabling changes)

A) yes but you will break something. You need to use an appropriate tool to release the head unit from the holder basket. It is also bolted on the back to a metal hanger strap thats secured to the underside of the deck.

B) Yes. However, I would not bank on the power harness being the same.
