Maybe buying first Malibu

Recommended Posts

I am a new member looking to buy our first Malibu. We are looking at a 2005 V-Ride. It is in very good condition, gel coat is nice, vinyl is almost perfect. It has rear and center ballast, perfect pass, wedge, heater, fiberglass platform, Titan II tower with speakers, bimini, and just under 600 hours. They are willing to take $27,000 for it. Does this sound like a decent price for this boat? We are new at buying a full inboard so just not sure what we should be paying. I have done as much research about the boat itself. Thanks so much!

If it's the boat only with no trailer I think you can get it for a bit less. Also, it is a built in ballast system or just bags? GPS Perfect Pass? 600 hours is "middle aged" for the engine. Make sure you test drive it. A high pitch whine is normal (from intake) but otherwise it should sound like a new pickup truck engine. Turn prop shaft by hand out of water and no vibrations at speed. Smooth easy steering. Very smooth shifting compared to I/O. Take it to a dealer or service place to have the engine data downloaded. You can learn a lot from that especially the "true" hours. Etc. Etc.

Good place to start: http://www.themalibucrew.com/forums/index.php?/page/articles.html/_/buying-a-used-boat-r11

Have fun and welcome!

Where are you located? Prices will vary by region, but in the NW that is a good price.

That really sounds to me like a a very fair price for a good-condition 10 yr. old Malibu v-drive boat. Engine hours don't really scare me at all, assuming the boat has been regularly maintained.

You might ask about maintenance records, but a good rule of thumb is that if the exterior & interior have been well-taken-care-of, the owner was likely also meticulous about engine maintenance.

Be sure to test drive it. You also might consider forking over a hundred bucks or so to have a mechanic check it out before big money changes hands.

Sounds like the one on Minneapolis Craigslist, looks like it is on Minnetonka a few miles from my place.

If that is the boat then Pictures are not really good enough to say anything about condition. Price is a little high if there is no trailer, ad doesn't mention or show one. If there is a trailer then it sounds pretty good assuming condition and maintenance are how the describe.

Sounds like a fair price with the trailer. Titan 2 tower is the only way I'd buy that boat, as the illusion tower isn't great, so that's a perfect boat as far as options.

The boat does come with a single axel trailer. The Perfect Pass is paddle wheel but could be upgraded to GPS if I want to. Test drive was done last week and everything was good there. Condition was as described. It is the one in Minnetonka, if you look he has a lift for sale for $4,950 and it shows better pics of the boat. He is now willing to do $26,000 since he is moving and needs it gone.

Ah, not Minnetonka - Lake Minnewashta, even closer to my house. From what you can see in the pictures there it looks good. That lift is a real steal too.

Just an FYI. Last year at exactly this time, I bought a 2005 iride. 125 hours. I also live in MN. My iride doesn't have speakers on the tower, nor does it have heat. I do have the Titan III tower though. There is built in ballast in the middle, and the owner threw in a fat sack in the rear compartment. I got it for $24k. I don't know how the new prices of the iride compare to the vride, but I image they'd be close. Oh, mine also came with a dual axle trailer. You might be able to talk him down some more, using this as a data point, and given the fact that he has to move. You'll need to store and winterize - use that as more leverage to get the cost down.
