Trailer Light Issue

Recommended Posts

Okay, so my nighttime running lights on the trailer are not working at all. However, the trailer brake lights and turn signals are working just fine.

I have a 2005 Dorsey trailer and a 2002 Yukon.

Anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Check your fuse box on the Yukon for a 15-20 amp fuse under "Trailer tow lamps", or similar. If you have one under the hood and one under the dash, check the manual for both places.

If the fuses are good, then use a test light and check the connection at the lightcord plug. This will isolate the Yukon from the trailer. If you have lights at the plug, use the test light at the sockets and check for power. If not, go back up front and work your way back using the test light tip and pierce the wire after each connection and see where you lost power. If all are out, it has to be where all the wires are together. The grounds should be good since you have brake lights. I'm betting a fuse.

I have a neighbor that had a fuse out that we found under the hood (Ford F-150) and the manual didn't even say anything about them being there.

Almost always is the fuse on the tow vehicle.

Mine was in the fuse box in the engine compartment of the F150 so I had a little trouble tracking it down.

Thanks guys. So I checked the fuses and yes one 15amp was blown inside the engine compartment of the Yukon. I replaced it and checked to see if the problem was solved. Well, the fuse blew again.

OK- try this: at your swing away tongue, look at the wire harness where it could get pinched from swinging tongue back into place. It happened to me once on the last trailer. I wrapped the wires in a protective cover and zip tied them to the flexible brake hose so no pinchey. If you pinched the + for the running lights (brown??) you would blow a fuse...

Hope it helps...

My problem was the running lights were working but not the indicator/brakes.

You can by a harness tester from Walmart for a couple of bucks to see if the truck is the problem. It just plugs in and lights up when you turn the lights on.

I had to take mine to the dealer (06 Dodge ram) as all the fuses were good and I still had the problem.

They reset the computer control in the truck and everything worked fine after that.

I have also seen a bulb filament break and cause a short to ground. Check all of the wires where they pass through the holes in the frame. One may have rubbed through.
