Shaft packing drip seems to have slowed on it's own

I'm not sure what happened here?

Last year, I had a much faster drip than I wanted. However this year, the drip has slowed considerably, and I don't notice any extra water in the bilge if left overnight.

I had purchased everything to replace the packing with the goretex material, but now, I'm not sure I want to mess with it at all. I haven't done anything to the packing nut recently to change the drip rate. I have been running the boat a lot in the last two weeks, and it seems to be running very good.

Anybody have this happen, or know if this is unusual?

Just curious.

i think some of the packings will swell over a period of exposure to water

if it works don't fix it

If you are happy with the drip rate leave it alone.

keep in mind you do want a small amount of leakage dripping for cooling
