help

Recommended Posts

I have an 03 VLX and the packing nut needs to be adjusted because it is letting in to much water. Are there special tools needed to adjust it?? I cannot get it to tighted. Any help would be appreciated.

Go buy an 1 7/8" open / box end wrench cut it in half, leave just enoungh on the open end side to wrap your hand around. Works like a charm. About $30.00 for the wrench.

I used a pipe wrench and a big crescent to pull the packing nut counter-clockwise and the other nut clockwise. (had to angle one of the wrenches so it had enough room to untighten the packing nut)

There was very little room to manuever and crank each time the wrench ran out of space, but it got the job done, and still have both wrenches in tact.

I also found that adjusting the nuts was not enough to slow the leak, so I installed the "dripless" packing and haven't had a leak since. (well, just a couple drips a minute to lubricate, but much less than prior)

FYI and good luck, Mook

Yep two mini pipe wrenches work like a charm. You don't have to go super tight either.... Just a good cinch on the lock nut keeps everything from busting loose..

I'm sure the pipe wrench works just fine. But, my Dad always taught me "the proper tool for the job". If he ever saw me put a pipe wrench on a Hex nut he probably would still kick my 49 year old a$$. Biggrin.gif
