aren't most trailer hubs 5x4.5

Yep, this is the old Chrysler/Ford bolt pattern. Back in the day, your truck spare would fit your trailer.

All trailer rims I have seen have the offset such that the mounting surface is centered in the rim. Anything else any it's cantilevered out and puts more load on the wheel bearings.

I live in Australia. And the trailer is a easy tow.

I understand fully the wider the rim is the different offset qill be present.

But with say a 17 in rim. and a 8 or 8.5 wide.

What offset to keep it in the guard.

Plus 20?

It really depends on how wide your fenders are. I'm running the following:

18x9

Offset +20

Bolt patter 5x4.5

But I have the wider fenders from Boatmate (made for the 18x9's)

With an easytow you should have a 5 x 114.3. Stick with the 17's as you'll want the outer diameter right and an 8 " rim. With this combination you wont exceed the load limits of the tyre. The offset will be +45 or higher. In short anything toyota or lexus will bolt up, honda is +50 or 55 and nissan are in between. Stick with a 235/55x17 tyre with a 640 mm od. Anything more and you will have clearance issues and not have an appropriate load rated tyre. One last piece of info is measure the centre bore. Jap wheels are typically 60mm bore wheras your hub will be 63. Don't bother asking easytow they don't know.
