Amps boards - making them bigger

Recommended Posts

Murphy8166

It looks like to wakesetter 10's and newer come with an amp board that has a vee'd botton that rests in a specific groove on the outer hull of the passenger compartment. They seem pretty small one you throw 3-4 amps on them as well as the black box.

Has anyone gone back with a bigger board? If so - how did you mount it. That wall is pretty specific with where you can mount screws and not go thru the hull

Ive made a larger one for the past 4 (2 vlx, 22 mxz and 24 mxz) that we've done. Made them just to the point of fitting in the locker opening. The problem with the OEM wall is that its cut out behind the carpet specifically for the footprint of the factory amps. This makes it useless for doing anything aftermarket because theres no good way to mount the amps with 3 bug squares missing behind the carpet.

Replicated the shape, just pushed the height and width as needed.

So it still fits in the same grove at the base...I am understanding you correctly.

pretty much. We fallowed the contour of the floor and made it a tall and as wide as needed and what you fit. Minor correction after looking back at a few pics. On the 22mxz, the OEM board stayed as is and the amps got a custom enclosure under the port side seat. On one of the VLX and the 24, the BB got relocated off the front of the amp wall for more space and a cleaner look.

You can attach new mounting blocks made of PVC trim board to the hull with something like Bondo. Then screw new amp racks to the new mounting blocks.

One thought would be to keep the old board there and just mount the new one to it.

When building a new amp board and mounting it to the hull you may have to create your own mounting points for the new amp board. We have found that building small mounting blocks out of resin-coated (for water resistance) birch plywood and attaching them to the hull works great. To attach the block you will want to use some type of body filler that contains fiverglass strands. Standard Bondo body filler doesn't have any structural integrity, so make sure to use something like Kitty Hair fiberglass reinforced body filler.
