Stiff Steering

Recommended Posts

I agree, thanks to all for the tips.

My steering had been getting progressively stiffer, especially to the left.  Last time out, it felt like something was really sticking near the left stop.
I disconnected the steering cable and the steering wheel spins easily stop to stop. But the rudder was somewhat stiff through most of the range and got almost stuck at one end of travel.  I tried adding grease through the zurk but don’t know how much got in because my grease gun is crap.  It didn’t make much difference.

Dropped the rudder to get a better look.  It had some light wear marks on it so I cleaned it up with 400 grit sand paper (don’t know if this really helped) and cleaned out the rudder housing.  Added grease to both the rudder shaft and housing, reassembled, and the rudder now turns with no resistance. Hooked everything up and I can spin the steering wheel with one finger with ease.  No cable replacement needed.
