Rust or sand in water jacket

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of winterizing my 2004 Response LXI with just under 600 hours on it.

Upon removing the engine knock sensor to drain the block on that side, I found that the hole was clogged with quite a bit black sand or rust. Not sure what it is exactly but it is covered with black liquid, I dont think its oil though. When I took a stiff wire and poked around to move some of it out, I found that there is quite a bit of it further up inside the water jacket. The other side did not have this problem as it is hooked up to the shower and is constantly being flushed out.

Any Ideas on what this stuff is, and why there is so much of it?

It's most likely stuff you pick up in the lake. It all depends on what type of water you run in.

I'd run the motor with the fake a lake hooked up and both of the block drain holes open for a little while to flush that junk out.

Normal, you can go ahead and flush it out like Pete said.

You can leave the knock sensor unplugged, you won't get an alarm until near WOT if the knock sensor is not plugged in.

Glass, it goes inline on the pick up side between the scupper and the V/D-drive. You can get them from a couple places and the sediment bowl (get the clear bowl) is supposed to face down. It will definately increase the life of your impeller and eliminate overheating related to clogged trans cooler screens. Now with my "larger" LSV I don't have nearly as much room in the bilge area to put it in, (pumps) go figure.
