Strainer installation to RLXi

Inlet water strainer installation to 2005 RLXi.

I decided to install an inlet water strainer to my 2005 Response LXi with Monsoon 340. At the same time I took the opportunity to also install a readily accessible flushing point.

I obtained a Sherwood sea water strainer that can be obtained from Bakes Marine here.

Here is the strainer with one elbow fitted as part of the preparation for installation.

The original inlet hose was removed and I fitted a tee imediately downstream of the inlet stop valve to provide the connection point for the flushing line.

I fabricated a simple bracket from a piece of aluminium angle, bolted it to the redundant fuel pump pad on the engine block and used hose clamps to secure the strainer to the bracket. (The bracket has since been painted gloss black and looks much better!)

The hard wall hose preferred for suction service is quite difficult to manipulate at these short radii but persistence prevailed to produce a nice, neat installation that I'm very pleased with.

 

The flushing point hose was run around the rear of the boat and terminates under the port side gunnel behind the Malibu badge. There is a stop valve and a blanked hose connecter is normally fitted to provide double protection against sucking air when running.

Very clean install.

Just keep a VERY close eye on strainers like this, as a plugged strainer can easily starve the motor for water.  Based on the quality of your install, i'm sure you will, but posting for information for others looking to do this.

For a number of years, many manufactures didn't include these, as the risk of the strainer getting plugged and starving the motor was greater than the motor eating whatever it sucked up.

 

If you boat in water with a lot of small debris, this is great, but most places it is a bit unnecessary.
