So i have a 2002 response lx and have started thinking i might get a tower, my only concern is because my boat is not real big i dont want something that is too big for my boat. I have never really looked at towers cause i mainly ski so i dont know what i should be looking for so any advise would be great!!!

I know exactly how you feel. When I bought my boat it came with the Skylon Pro something tower and thing it is way to tall for the Response. I have been thinking of swapping to a Titan II DL6 or have one custom built shorter. Hoping to get the over all height about a foot shorter then the Skylon. Guess I need to call Star One.

Look on Ebay, a fella last week had a 2001 Response LX with an Illusion tower. The boat did not sell, but there were several pics of the boat. He wanted 25k!!

I would just put a fly high pole on. Attaches to your pylon and a cable goes down from the top of the pole to the bow eye. That'll get you everything you need for intermittent boarding, and is stowable. If you decide you need a tower down the road, you can sell your fly high pole, as I am pretty sure they are universal.

I have a tower on my Echelon LX, but wouldn't have put one on if it didn't already come with it.

towers are far more stable in terms of the boat "lean" side to side than a skylon. We had a 99 with what later got dubbed the "extreme" tower. proportions were great and it was not too big for the boat. be careful looking for an illusion, the ski rope will hit it.

The "Laws of Physics" disagree with you.

I was thinking the same thing.

yea i got a fly high pole and was wanting to upgrade to tower so i wouldnt have to mess with pole anymore. i only do a little wakeboarding but all my friends and most of my family like the wakeboard and really i want to get the wakeboards out of my floor and give me what little bit of legroom i had back! i have been looking at titan dII6 and trying to find pics of it

Get yourself one of the most solid towers on the market.. Star One Standard (Series 1) or Deluxe (Series 2)...

I'm not a physicist, but in practice they don't. On an older response I had we used skylon on and then put tower on. no comparison as to roll. This was discussed a long time ago on mbo too. As I recall the discussion, an extended pylong has more leverage given the lever is longer because the leverage on the pylon is lower than deck for tower.

If the rope attach point is the same height above the any given point, the moment on the boat relative to the water is EXACTLY the same. Any 1st semester freshman engineering student can show you why.

If you saw a difference, it was because the skylon mounted the rope at a higher point than the tower.

It wasn't. It's OK if you don't believe me. Per what I rcall about the old mbo thread what you said would be true if the single mount (pylon) attached at the same height as the gunnel (tower) but the pylon gives more leverage because the fulcrum point is lower. I'm not going to get into this any further, I'm not an engineer will only say that my first hand personal experience is that towered boats are more stable than skylon'd.

Flapjack is right about the physics part. Assuming the tow point is exactly the same as the Skylon (front-to-back and vertical height), the force at the distance is the same (definition of moment loads). One thing that can be different is the amount of deflection of the tow point relative to the boat itself. I would expect the Skylon would move more side-to-side than the tower, though I have seen some tower designs that may be more flexible when loaded in these directions.

As to the tower on a RLX... I have a '99 that I have a custom tower on and it is nice in some ways but not in others. There is not the cable to avoid when trying to get to the bow anymore. I can store stuff on the racks. I can use it as a drying rack. Speakers seem to sound better from up there. People are impressed and think you have a cool boat just because you put some tubes up there. These I see as the major advantages. As to the negatives... it is a pain in the butt to put on a cover!!!! More weight. No real significant advantage to the rider. A whole lot of time and/or money to get. If I had to do it again I'd have to say that I would not. Things were pretty simple with the Skylon.

Dumb or not...we roll with a tower on my closed bow Echelon.

I know I know....such a injudicious act....so what kiss my grits. I got a great deal on our boat buying it from a family member and have spent very little money adapting it to suit our needs and I am happy that I can do just about anything with my little boat that could.

I think you will be happy going from a Fat pole to a tower, as I know I was. Bottom line it's your boat, do what works for you.

There are more solid (and expensive options but for the price this was my choice and it serves its purpose well. I am still happy with my choice several years later an I think it compliments the boat well, despite the nay-sayers.

When we went to tower on an older 99 RLX, it was a great choice. Boat looked better, was more stable for riders, less stress on pylon, looked better, allowed us to spread out multiple barefoot lines, looked better, and looked better.

That there's one pretty boat, partner.

That said, the only tower that I think truly compliments a DD is the Extreme tower they were putting on the responses. Flowed with the windshield lines and everything.

I agree. Mostly because it was a mini tower. I heard last year that XTP would still build them if you contacted them through Monster Tower. Matter of fact, one of the Milwaukee Open tow boats had one on it last summer, so Malibu was using them in 2010. Only downfall is that Moomba was buying that style tower before they could get the Illusion.
