Removing prop without a prop puller?

Recommended Posts

On an 06 23 LSV with a 4 blade prop? Has anyone accomplished this? I do have a set of 3 different jaw pullers that look like an impeller puller with 3 arms instead of 2, they are 3 inch 4 inch and 6 inch. But other than that I do not have a prop puller and no time to order one. I need to have the prop off and to the refinishers by tomorrow morning so any good ideas?

how about do a drive by to any local dealer and ask them to pull it for you real quick. It was a 10 minute job for me, so for a boat mechanic probably 2 minutes. It might help to have a six pack in your hand when you ask for the help.

On the trailer I have been able to loosen the nut (leave it on) and tap (not hard) with a soft dead-blow hammer next to the hub. Stock prop popped right off, ACME 515 took a few more taps. DISCLAIMER: not responsible for damage if someone takes a sledge to their prop.

In the water you can loosen the nut (leave it on about 1/4 to 1/2 inch back from prop) and bump the boat in reverse. Should hear a thud when it releases.

I will say that I do not recommend these as regular practice, but "emergency" only.

My local prop shop loans out pullers for free if you're bringing them the prop to get work done. I finally broke down and bought one, but I imagine most prop places would do something similar.

Unfortunately the boat is currently not movable, stuck on a trailer with a also busted jack and tow vehicle is out of town. So I can't put the boat in water to bump the throttle or bring it by a local shop unfortunately. I'll have to do it tonight as well and most shops just closed. I will try the dead blow hammer idea though. I also have a torch?
