Recommended Posts

just bought my first inboard boat....2000 23 escape 23lsv. has the monsoon and the engine has 118 hours. manual says normal temp is 140-160....im getting readings at 160-165-168 range. never seen lower than 160. seems like temp falls a little the faster i go. normal????? too paranoid??? i know NOTHING about inboards to be specific if you tell me to check something. thanks

maybe your impeller is missing a few blades give it and your tranny cooler a check.

What about that specific part? :Tease3:

The impeller that NDawg is talking about is the raw water pump, brings lake water into the engine. It will be on the front of the motor, you vdrive guys will have to look near the transome to find the front of the motor as your motor is installed backwards  . The impeller should be changed every other year. There are two hoses that lead to the raw water pump one of which comes from the bottom of the boat. This is where it gets fun for you VDrive guys. you will need to take out 4 brass screws. (easy) find the one you droped (bit harder). Now you will need to grow an extra elbow in your third arm to make access to the front of the motor easier, if you cant do this then I believe the next best option is to hang from the cieling like a monkey. To remove the impeller, there is a specific puller you can get to pull it out or you can use a couple of paint can openers to reach the back of the impeller, a couple of pairs of needel nose plyers will work as well, just be paient or there will be missing fins as they will find their way into the jaws of the plyers. It does help to bump the motor over after you have removed the cover to help loosen the impeller.

If it is all there all is good you now have a spair as after all that work the you will be installing the new one.

The tranny cooler is where you find all the missing fins of your previous impeller. I am not 100% sure where it is located on a VDrive, mine is on the front of the motor near the raw water pump, left had side (remember your motor is in backwards). I looks like a wide spot in the cooling hoses with two oil lines leading to it. Remove the lower water hose and look inside, it should look a lot like honey comb inside. Clean out what ever debire you find inside.

Good luck and tell Nate to be more specific next time. :tease1:

The rubber pieces are a shredded impellar, either your current one or a previous one. My guess is previous owner tore up an impellar and had it changed but did not clean transmission cooler.I found the same thing about a year after buying my boat. I had checked and changed my impellar but my boat started overheating and vapor locking after I had it a year. Apparently the previous owner had shredded an impellar and did not clean the transmission cooler. Boat has run perfect since I cleaned it out. No overheating and no vapor locking.
