Windshield Brace (Stripped Screw)

Recommended Posts

So I have a stripped screw on the windshield brace on our BU. It's stripped on the side that bolts to the windshield frame. Unfortunately this is a very small area of aluminum to mount to in the first place.

What cool tricks have you guys done to repair this? I hate rattles and generally things not being tight. I am sure that I am not the only one who has had this issue but a search didn't yield much.

Thanks as always!

Fatter screw one size up worked for me.

bigger screw?

Right now the screw is pretty "fat"... short but "fat". Not sure if it is the factory screw or not since I am not the original owner. Also won't a larger screw simply suffer the same fate at some point due to lack of surface area for the screw to "bite" into? I'll hit the hardware store and see what they may have though.

Just don't over tighten the fatter screw and you'll be fine. As you noted, there is not a lot of material there so it will strip out easily if you over tighten it.

Could you rivet it instead of using a screw?

Now that is a hell of an idea. I'll throw my calipers on it and see if I can find an aluminum or stainless rivet in the correct size.
