Ballast tanks cracked!

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 VLX and I was out last week noticed my two ballast tanks were leaking pretty bad. The service guy at my marina took a look and said that the front and rear hard ballast tanks were leaking at the hoses were they attach to the tanks but that both tanks also had cracks in them and were leaking bad. I am going to take the boat to the local dealer and have them look at it to fix it.

I am new to all this and was wondering what kind of price I am looking at to get these things replaced!!! It sounds expensive. Does anyone out there have any ideas on cost or anything?

Thanks!

did you leave water in the tanks over the winter?

would they not have to be full with no exit point to cause an expansion crack?

No water was left in the tanks. When I had the boat winterized I asked the guy at the marina if there was anything special I needed to do to prepare the tanks for winter and he said no but he would check everything to make sure the boat was ready for winter.

I don't know what to think though because they worked last year with no leakage.

The tanks are below the floor.

Can you reach down and cover the area with JB Weld or some similar type of epoxy glue? I don't know if it would work but with the cost of new tanks it would be worth a try.

That's what the dealer did to fix my crack at the tank fitting on the center tank.
