Trailer Maintenance

Recommended Posts

The DHM tandem axle trailer that I haul my VLX on is now a little over 2 years old. While we use the boat a lot, the trailer has an easy life since we are only 3 miles from the lake. I haven't done any maintenace on it up to this point but I am going to be making a couple of 100+ mile trips with it in a couple of weeks.

What should I inspect, service or replace in preparation for my excursions?

Check the level of break fluid and color. Make sure it does not have water in it (Milky = water). Look at the break disks to see if the breaks are working, there should be signs of mechanical cleaning after you have towed it home. If you really want to check the breaks disconnect the electrical from the truck and back (try) up a hill.

Inspect tires. Two years you should be alright. Look for cracks, uneven wear and any sign of cord.

Hubs and barring buddies. I have oil bath barrings, you should as well. look at the view glass in the center of the hub, the oil should be free of water. Not milky.

Check that all lights work and connections are good. again only two years you should be good there.

General security and all tie downs should be used.

Have fun on your trips. I have never shied away from traveling with my boat, just remember to give yourself a little extra time to get there.
