Cleaning Ballast

The lake we boat on is a mud bottom and not the absolute cleanest. I would think that the pumps for the ballast would occasionally suck up things besides water. Is there a filter on the pumps or something else I should occasionally check for buildup?

The pumps I've seen have a cap you can remove from the top, and get to the impeller inside. The cavity in there is pretty big & I would think it would be tough to get a lot of silt or mud to build up. Sucking weeds or grass is more likely to cause a problem.

Only reason I've ever heard of people cleaning their ballast is because of some infestation on lakes in their area, eg; zebra mussels, etc.

I bleach the inside of my (1) ballast bag before I store it for the (10 month) winter.

That's just me.
