UGH. Raw water pump

Recommended Posts

Wellll I let my friend put the bolts on the raw water housing and sure enough the top bolts head broke off and now the screw end is still there, no head, and no good grip. I have already ordered the replacement screw. But any ides on how to get it out? Especially without removing the raw water pump since that seems like it might be difficult

Small EZ out might get it out of there.

Agreed. Since you had it break off during tightening and not while loosening a stubborn rusted stud, I would guess a little EZ-out would do the trick. It's a brass screw on the V-Drive's right? Should be nice and soft to drill into.

IF it's not broken off too deep it might be easier to cut a slot into the end of it with a small cutting disc in a dremel and back it out with a screwdriver.

This might work and if it won't damage anything around it you can heat the bolt hole with a torch and it will expand the metal.. Worst case scenario you drill out the hole, tap it and put a heli-coil

Take the other 3 screws out. Remove cover. Grab what is left of the screw sticking out of the water pump housing with Sharp edged pliers, vice grips or whatever and spin the stud back out. It should not be tight as it is not torquing down anything and there is probably a thread or 2 or 3 sticking out.

Exactly. If you cant get a grip on it with pliers you can use a punch sharpened to a point and hammer and tap on the screw in a circular pattern and back the screw out that way.

Great advice here, I would try in the following order:

1) remove the other 3 screws / pulley cover, and see if you have enough sticking out to get a locking pliers on it (do yourself a favor and throw some penetratingoil on it (pb blaster or kroil) and keep drenching it every 5 minutes for 15 minutes before you try to back it out)

2) easy out (it wasn't mentioned but use a sharp center punch to get a hole right in the middle of the bolt, then drill your pilot hole, then use the EZ out)

3) drilling / tapping
