Fender traction pads/ grip tape, etc.

I've got a tandem axle Extreme trailer and my diamond plate is coming off. I've got to replace it or do something else like grip tape or that EVA foam padding. Just wondering if any of you have done anything outside the norm that looked nice and worked well. Going to Home Depot and buying grip tape is too cheesy. I have looked at some of the traction pad products but can't seem to find anything pre-cut.

I've also thought about switching over to stainless or chrome (whatever they are) fenders, anyone know how much those will set ya back?

Anyone have any cool ideas?

Thanks.

Besides the traction above (which looks and works well) have you looked at

http://airjunky.com/2.htm

or

http://www.wakejunky.com/

both of these can be used for what you are looking for. My first set of fenders had a malibu traction pad on them, but after extreme had to replace my fenders, the new ones didnt have anything. I prefer them not to, as I dont let anyone step on my fenders to get in the boat. Good luck in your search.

BTW, the guy who has the product in the first link is a member here on the board if you want to contact him. (Bill_AirJunky)

I bought a roll of this, should be here by Friday, we'll see how well it works.

trailer traction

You sure you wan't the sticky sandpaper on your fenders? Hard to get off once it's on.

Actually I forgot about this, I put this stuff on a month or so ago. It's nothing fancy but adds good traction and doesn't really feel like sandpaper, it's not that coarse. I'm not sure how much other options cost but for $25 I'm pretty happy with this.

Yea, I sell the Traxx pad (aka; Gator Grip) here: http://airjunky.com/traxxed

But frankly I don't recommend it for trailer fenders. It's a bit harder than wetsuit neoprene, softer than the hard rubber Malibu has put on the swimsteps. But if you were to wear shoes & walk on it, it tends to wear. Depending on how much you climb in & out of your boat, I'd expect it to last 2 or 3 yrs before it would wear thru.

I didn't care for the cheezy grip tape on my own Extreme trailer so I found a local supplier for the 5 bar diamond plate. Cost me $40 to have two pieces cut for my fenders. It's a great, non-skid, durable surface. And looks pretty good.

Recently I pulled the boat out at the ramp & noticed I was missing the back piece of diamond plate. I went back & found it in the water by the ramp. Extreme uses construction adhesive to install the diamond plate & water had been captive under it for a couple years & started to rust & cause the paint to peel up under the diamond plate. I sanded the surface down, painted it again & reinstalled the diamond plate..... good as new.

Be careful not to get any wax on it (if you wax the trailer). I believe that (sandpaper style) stuff will stain (whiten) if waxed.

Wax my trailer, ha! Yeah right, I'll just buy a new one, previous owner dipped it in salt water a few times so I'll be replacing it in a few years!!! Good point though, wax probably wouldn't come off of it very easily.

Nemire, That saltwater is another reason to consider a brake system rebuild! (sorry for the hi-jack)

What did you use to re-attach it?

Liquid Nails construction adhesive.

I did diamond plate on the fenders of a previous boat & used pop rivets. You just have to be sure your installing rivets in places that the tires are not going to hit if they bottom out under the fender.
