Bent Prop - Need new one

Recommended Posts

Very windy at the Delta the other day adn while putting the boat on the trailer the prop hit the prop guard (how ironic). Very slight bend on all 3 blades. Took it out te next week and notice about a 1-2 grand in decrease in RPM to MPH. 2 questions:

1- How bad is it to drive with a damaged prop

2 - The plan is to get a new one and repair the old one. What prop should I replace it with. I have a '06 Sunsetter diamond hull, 30% slalom, 40% wakeboard/wakeskate, 30% Airchair.

I would not drive with a bent prob, as the vibration will cause way more damage to tranny and loose screws. I have no clue on what a replacement should be though.

I have always idled/limped back to the dock after bending the prop. I used to damage a couple a year on the Willamette river due to crazy sand bars and unmarked underwater hazards. Luckily I never bent the shaft. Once you put the new prop on if you do feel vibration you will want to get a checkup.

I would call Jim at Acme. I believe he will suggest the Acme 537 for what you are doing. Unless you are at elevation or use a large amount of ballast over factory that should be the prop for you.

Good plan. What prop do you currently have on the boat? My '06 Sunscape came with the Acme 381.

When it was damaged, I replaced it with the Acme 537 and had the 381 repaired.

On my boat, the 537 gives an even stronger hole shot. At WOT, top speed is about 2mph slower

than the 381. At slalom and cruising speeds, my boat tachs about 500 rpm higher with the 537 vs.

the 381, so I'm burning a bit more gasoline with it. But, the 537 does better with ballast at surfing

and wakeboarding speeds. So, both props have their place, depending upon which activities we are

primarily using the boat for, and I've been changing them back and forth once or twice a season

(I mostly slalom ski early spring and then again in the fall, but early to late summer, the kids are

doing alot more wakeboarding and surfing).

Thanks all for the responses - called Jim at Acme and he recomended a 525, I have a 515, now and said I am probably safe, I am not feeling any vibration and only lost a couple hundred RPM. . I want to get this by tomorrow so I am working with a local shop recommended by Jim. Probably end up spending an extra $100, but, hey, better safe than sorry.

Im in total agreement here ... Depending on where you live I would recommend Kevin's Prop Shop in Antioch. He has repaired a few for me . Good Luck!

We ordered a spare from http://www.nettleprops.com/ recently. They beat all the prices we found online and we had the prop in under a week. The service was great and I'd recommend at least pricing them out.

Call Steve at 916 852 8548 or http://www.thomasmarinepropeller.com/. He is the most knowledgeable prop guy in the area. He is an Acme dealer tooo. He is in Rancho Cordova area.

Talked to Steve - Great Guy - He will be dropping off my prop and a prop puller tomorrow as they will be passing by the marina. Gave me a good deal too.
