Filling MLS ballast

Recommended Posts

Anyone know of any contraindications to filling the midship ballast tank while underway?

Wasn't sure if this could hurt the pump, etc. I've not seen anything in the manual about this.

No worries. I do it all the time.

Ok, thanks.

Probably stupid question, but just knew if I didn't find out I would read some thread about someone ruining their pump doing it...

One of these days you should open the bilge door by the driver's seat & pull the little lock screw off the top of a pump. Then unscrew the cap. These pumps are so ridiculously simple it will blow you away. The motor is sealed in the bottom portion of the case. The impeller is right below the top cap & very easy to access, clean, replace, etc. I imagine the only way to burn them up is to keep running them when the impeller is blocked from turning. But the water entering the impeller area has zero contact with the motor, so it can't be cooling it at all.

I'll check it out.
