belt squealing

Recommended Posts

My 96 Malibu sunsetter has a squeal in the belt that seems to stop once and a while. I also burnt off a belt last year that was brand new. Any ideas what could be happening?

Thanks

Troy

New belts stretch a bit. You have to re tighten after a while. Also, it could be bad bearings in the alternator. Loosen the belt and give the pulley a spin to check for resistance or roughness..

Use a piece of metal or a level or Carpenter square if you have room and try to lay it against two of the pulleys by the groove,Kinda hard to explain but your straight edge should lay flat across the pulley, at the very least it might help you eyeball it, a string may help too Dontknow.gif

Yeah,

It's difficult at best if you don't have the special tool laser that an auto mechanic would have. Maybe try to borrow one?
