I have an 05 vlx with an illusion x tower. In 06 the illusion tower came with the pull pin and spring hardware, (replacing the allen key bolt) to fold down the tower with ease. Has anyone made an attempt at upgrading the older illusion tower with the newer hardware? I want to build a boathouse and would prefer to lower the tower down as opposed to having a 10ft door.

Since no one else has replied, you should check with your dealer's service dept and ask them about it, I am sure they will know straight away how/if this can be done.

You could probably add the quick release pins by replacing the tower feet (probably a few hundred dollars plus labor). To add the lift assist, I think you'll need a new upper piece in addition to the below gunnel spring system, which means if you want to do everything, you're basically buying a completely new tower.

Thanks for the response, it's lookin like I am staying with the old setup and building a taller boathouse!
