illusion tower powder coat

Recommended Posts

just curious if any of ya'll have had any problems with the powder coat chipping off. I've had several pieces come off and I've found a local place that will sand blast and redo the coat for 200$ which seems very inexpensive... anybody else had this done?

Mine has chipped off in some places from folding the tower down to put it away after use, but I'm not really worried about it too much. I'll buy and touch up kit when I have time and fix it for a lot less than $200 Thumbup.gif

$200 is a good price if they are going to prep it properly. Make sure that price includes media blasting the tower and a chemical treatment to ensure the powder bonds well. My power coating guy does both and I have been really happy with his work and the durability of the finish.

I see chipping occasionally where the tower meets the feet, not a un-common wear/stress point like hinges on a car. It's too bad they couldn't hide the hinge point more.

Our local powder coater is around $250 too, the nightmare part is re-wiring the tower. It's a day or more labor to do so I wouldn't do it unless it was a DIY project.

well I'm planning on running a new stereo system soon anyway so wiring was already going to be an issue... For those that had your towers done, did you take it any of the accessories off before hand? how do you get tower speakers and the ball off?

You'll have to remove everything, including wiring and all the little plastic hole covers. The heat from the powdercoating process will melt anything that you do not remove. I havent removed the ball or the light on mine yet so I cant help with that.

Local dealer wants 350 for removal and installation... Is that something that I can't do with 2 other friends and the right tools? what goes into removing the tower?

I believe 3 of you would manage just fine. Rewiring the tower is going to be the pain.

You will need to pull everything off, it gets baked in a oven (300-500 deg?) Speakers are simple, un-screw and un-bolt. Pylon, remove the top cap with a putty knife, loosen the center Allen set screw, remove the top nut, remove the pylon head, then remove the pylon base. Nothing complicated.

That's a pretty decent deal, it would take us probably 2.5 hours off and 2.5 hours on.

It can easily be done with you and your buddies, no problem.
