Polishing Wedge

Back in my Sport bike days a few of my buddys decided to polish our wheels, when done right they come out looking almost like crome! Was thinking about doing it to the wedge but not sure if there is some sort of coating that would keep it from rust. What kind of metal is the wedge made of? Anyone ever seen this before? Would make a good winter project.

You may want to use the search function, there is a thread on here where someone polished it and came out looking really nice. Believe the member name was sunsetter95 (or something like that). He has pics and a detailed description of what he did.
