Locking storage

Recommended Posts

I have an 01 SLXi. I really love the large locking trunk, or should I say I loved the trunk before this past weekend. We were out of town for a family reunion that was at Ft. Gibson Lake in NE Oklahoma. As always before a long trip I pack all of the skis, boards, tube, ropes, and anything else that I can fit in the trunk and lock her shut. We got in too late to hit the lake Friday night and decide on a sunrise ski set before breakfast. I got up @ 6:00 the next morning and went to the boat to get everything ready to go so we could be on the water by 6:30. I wiped off the dew and dead bugs from the night before, got the bimini up and ready, then I went to unlock the trunk. I put the key in and it turned easily....too easily and didn't stop turning. The stupid lock wouldn't open. Mad.gif I spent a good hour messing with the thing. I was worried that someone would see me breaking into the boat and call the law.

Anyway, here I am 3 hours away from home, and the nearest Bu dealer, with all of our watersports stuff locked away. I thought about hitting the road to my dealer. I could be there when they open and be back by 2 or 3 in the afternoon I thought. But I would miss a good part of the day on the water. I finally got fed up and twisted the handle as hard as I could and got the latch to twist enough to open the trunk lid. I left it at that and we hit the lake and salvaged the weekend.

Here is my question: Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else? Can you fix the darn lock? Or should I replace it? It looks like it comes apart from the inside but I haven't had the time to fart around with it yet.

Is the lock a "T-handled one" or a "handle" type? If it's the handle type, I had problems with it on our old Rlx trunk. But, I was never unable to open it after some jiggling...thats the technical term. I seem to remember that there is a screw that "tightens" the whole mechanism and will allow it to work right, but I could be wrong. Look for something like that, or see how it is assembled and reassemble, which might get rid of the play which you complain. If you lock it up a lot, maybe it wears out. I dunno...good luck
