Couple gauge related questions

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I've got a 98 Sunsetter LX with a couple gauge issues. After reading through several threads, I don't think the MMDC is the problem. Although, it could be since it's been such an issue for other folks.

Basically, my tach has always been erratic. I don't mind since I don't use it that often but I was think about a work around and came up with the idea of replacing it entirely with an aftermarket unit. Like something from Autometer.

My question is, has anyone done this before? If so, what size tach did you use and which model? Obviously, I'd like to get something that closely matches my existing set-up.

Second, towards the end of last season, my fuel gauge quit working. While the MMDC could certainly be the problem, I suspect the sender in the gas tank is the culprit. Has anyone else encountered this? If so, what was the fix?

thanks!

Can't say that I know much about your tach issue, but if it's the MMDC then replacing the tach itself will probably not help. However, the erratic fuel gauge is a recurring Malibu issue and the sender is probably your culprit. Easy to replace, just search the tech forum and you will find many discussions there on this matter. Thumbup.gif

Thanks, I did find the write-up on the sender replacement. Looks easy enough.

As far as the tach is concerned. I was planning to use the pick that comes with the aftermarket unit. On my cars, it usually picks up the signal from one of the spark plug wires. Effectively bypassing the MMDC

to solve the erratic gauge issue, run an 8 Gauge wire from the negative terminal of the battery to the negative buss bar located under your dash (not sure where it is on your boat, in an '00 response its on the starboard side, right near the driver, under the combing pad).

Sounds like a ground issue to me, as Jgouvia3 said. A nonworking tach may be caused by an MMDC issue but not an erratic one.

Kind of what I was thinking. I had an issue this summer in which none of my gauges would power up when the boat was started, or they would shut down while we were under way. In my case, the issue was compounded because this would shut down the perfect pass as well. It turned out to be the clock causing the issue. I unplugged the clock, cleaned the terminals, and plugged it back, and never had the issue again.

I think that since those devices on the dash are wired the way they are, if one is flaky it affects the entire dash.
