Thanks for the response. I have replaced the fuel pump but can look into adding a low-pressure pump. I only run ethanol-free fuel in the boat.

You are describing what sounds like fuel vapor lock. Using ethanol-free fuel may help. A low-pressure pump between the tank and the standard fuel pump will also help.

I would.
Crank the engine, jumper A to B on the ECM diagnostic connector, set the timing, remove the jumper, turn off the engine.
You can download the service manual for your version of the ECM (either MEFI 4 or 5a, depending on your engine).

Did you set the base timing correctly with the new distributor? You have to put the ECM into service mode.
