Keep the old pump and rebuild it.  @justgaryposted some helpful information on the seal.  I had that happen on an older DD of mine and did what you did, simply purchased a new pump and had it sent overnight.  I kept the old one and rebuilt it in the event I ever needed to do a quick swap vs. a rebuild.  It's not a bad idea to have one laying around.

Good idea. Nervous to use it again though as it somehow chewed up my impeller. This impeller was brand new at the beginning of the summer

If the bearing was shot and the impeller wasn't spinning true to center, that would explain why the impeller was eaten by the pump.  As long as the bearing is seated correctly, this should not happen.  I've never seen it with the older crank driven Johnson pumps unless the bearing was shot.  The one that went bad on me also chewed up the impeller and I attributed it to the pump bearing failure.  ICBW, but it makes sense.
