M5/M6 Impeller Failures

Thanks @bcoppess23 for the information.  My boat goes in a week from Monday for the impeller fix so I'll definitely be picking up a spare impeller.  My hats off to whoever came up with way easier replace the impeller.

Does it include the puller nut?

No, that is another item and $24 (I believe).  I haven't picked on up as I was trying to see if there was an alternative...

Interesting .. I just got that but just purchased my boat last week that arrived at the dealer in October of 2020 so thought it was triggered by the recent purchase.

Interesting, I’ve been though three impellers in 130 hours. I haven’t gotten that email. I guess I’ll contact my dealer. With that said, replacing an impeller every 50 hours is ridiculous!!  I put between 150-200 hours a year on my boat, I guess I’ll stock up on impellers.

It’s really not. Almost every engine manufacturer out there recommends a service interval of 50-75 hours including the ever so touted PCM.

Still seems crazy to me, though.  The monsoons I've had in my past SSLX and current RLXi don't burn through impellers like that.  I replaced one in the SSLXi after 200 hours and it wasn't necessary.  I also replaced one in the RLXi since I've had it and it also wasn't necessary, but it was cheap insurance.

They recommend it - although I put 100-150 hours on them before replacing and the silly things always look fine when I throw them away.  I keep a spare in the boat and the 1 wrench and pliers that I need to replace it just in case I ever shredded on on the water.  Some boats are more difficult to get at, but ours is pretty easy.

I just got the same email this morning from Malibu.  It doesn't actually say what the fix is.  Are they just replacing the impeller?  Or the whole pump?

I called my closest dealer and they can't get me in until mid June which I don't want to do since who knows how long they would have it during prime boating season.

Even if they can fix it in an hour it would be a 4 hour round trip for me.  I'd rather just change it myself if it is just the impeller....

It appears from the email notification that the solution is a new "more durable" impeller, however @Kirk8907 stated in a previous post that Malibu replaced his entire pump assembly :dontknow:

I wonder if the email distribution means that the "new improved" impellers are now available?  I know my dealer has been waiting on them....

Just ask your dealer to send you the updated impeller. Our dealer is pretty cool on little things like that, they are 3 hours away... each way for us.

It’s a new impeller from a new supplier.

I agree @Slayer on the older indmars, however I still think the manual states 50hours. Maybe it’s 100. I bet these new impellers last a similar amount of time as the old indmar Johnson impellers.

Also to everyone out there flipping out over the change interval, it’s really not that unheard to see a lot wear on impellers between 50&100 hours. Look up how PCM impellers fare.

How have your PCM impellers done @ahopkinsVTX?  I've had two pcm motors, both with the belt driven raw water pump.  The first motor would eat impellers up pretty fast and 60 hours was pushing it.  On the current motor I went 120 hours and only changed because I had it all apart anyway.  The impeller still looked fine and I put it in a ziplock as a spare.

I did on my 19 at 80 hours and I was quite happy that’s when I choose to do it. On my M5 in our 20 it showed similar wear at 65 hours when I changed it. I’m just making the point that it’s not just Malibu engines that have a less than ideal impeller wear cycle.

I just talked the the dealer.  They will not sell me an impeller and will not give me the part number because they say depending on the housing it will need one vs. another impeller.

I offered to send a picture of the housing and the impeller but they said that was not good enough.  I explained I have a week long trip the first of June but they said they can't help me (first appointment is mid-June).

I'd hate to be stuck on the water without a spare.  I guess I could buy the old type...

Find another dealer.

Dealers arent going to just send impellers out because they are on allocation right now due to very low supply.

Well, I doubt the poster is asking for a free impeller.  And what is to be gained (besides the obvious) in not giving out a part number?

Link to comment

Yeah, not sure why they wont give the part number.

Its E100027. This is for the impeller for the Sherwood pumps.

Not saying he was asking for a free one, just stating that right now there arent enough to go around.

Yeah, I made it clear that I wanted the part number so I could purchase one online.  They wouldn't have sold or given me one.  He sounded pretty frazzled with the whole mess.

Won't find it online. At least not the one Malibu is having made. Globe makes one, I think it's a 626, but everywhere I've tried to get one is sold out.
