My question is what how long do the boat companies plan on supporting the software in these boats?  In ten years if you need a new LCD where do you find a ten year old technology type product?  Replacing it with a current generation LCD would probably require a software update and I don't really see the boat companies wanting to update ten year old technology to make your old boat work again.

I dabble in software development and think I could figure something out but I see all this tech in boats is going to get messy in the future.

The tech in our boats isn't supported by malibu, SN, MC... Its ordered from a vendor.  If the part fails and you go for service its likely they pull the unit and replace, then bill the vendor.  At least in my case, the computron in my 25 year old boat is not only unsupported but the company disbanded years go.

There's too much money tied up in these new boats for people to not get into development of aftermarket solutions...but I'm sure it's going to be a fortune.  Where there's a need, there is a business waiting to be started.  Look at the guys selling aftermarket malibu seat skins.

A 1 million year old computron replacement is currently running almost $600 and there is no guarantee it will work.

And a computron's  firmware is child's play compared to todays boats.
