I loved my MC and like the brand, but if you look up the definition of "MC bro douche" in the dictionary I think it has his picture there.

It is much more complex than that.  That's why there are patent lawyers.  You can't patent a result, but you can patent a method.  If Bayer patented aspirin, and Merck came along and discovered that they could take aspirin, and change the location of the OOH from being adjacent to the OOCH3, to another C over........should Bayer not be protected?  

Fact is, engineers that develop this kind of stuff will not think of a single way to accomplish a goal.  They'll think of a goal, and then look at all of the ways to accomplish said goal.  And they'll evaluate, either virtually with CFD or literally with parts, the different methods.  And then ultimately they'll be told by the finance guys that they can't afford the best system, and they'll get teh cheapest in production.  But I digress.  At any rate, if you have a good patent lawyer, he'll drive down through all of the concepts and include them in the patent.

Malibu didn't luck out on Surfgate.  They didn't just magically slap those things on and have the best thing since sliced bread.  It is called "product development" because that is what it is - development.  And in the same vein, some engineer there conceptualized a system to get that delayed convergence with equal weight by manipulation of the water around the hull.  I'm sorry that some people don't like it, but that is the way the world works, 20 years at a time.  Sometimes engineers just can't get around the really good idea that a competitor had.

And I'll finish up by saying this.  I've done product development for years.  If I had been the guy that came up with what became Surfgate and Malibu didn't protect my intellectual property through a robust patent, I would be *PI$$3D*.  And I'd also probably be a very well compensated engineer at a competing company because of it.

I dunno. Usually HR is given a budget for hiring in a year and a budget for raises in a year. Typically by a combination of senior management and/or the board. Or in MC25's case his parents just open up their giant Scrooge mcduckian vault...

HR is just Toby so management doesn't have to deal with all the people directly.

I don't know, in my world the customer dictates how much money I can spend. It is a little different in custom design build where everything is different and studies do not dictate what you can and cannot do and limit creativity.
