What does high pass mean?

Crossovers can block low requencies, but send highs. THat's high pass.

Low pass is where you block the highs and only pass the lows along. You'd send a lowpass signal to a subwoofer.

I don't like using the crossover in a HU or EQ when it's available on the external amplifier, but in system #2 a HU containing a HP filter would definitely be a plus.

Not sure if any of the current marine HUs have a built-in active crossover.

In the system #2 application you would be better off not attempting a passive solution. Just run it like it is....as a compromise to get the full bass extension but not necessarily a system that would offer much increase in amplitude to compete with the engine and wind at speed.
