The real question - if they are losing $450,000 in revenue, how much were they spending at that same time? If they are making a profit, that would be another gov't screw up as you don't shut down things that are paying for themselves without gov't funding. My guess is that article has some significant BS in it.

Exactly. The proof is the country is just fine without all of these non-essential services from the federal gov't.

$450,000 per day does not cover the cost of the national parks system, including parks, monuments, visitor centers, etc.

And you probably only feel they are "non-essential" until the first time you try to visit one of the parks, boat on a USACE reservoir, or even understand what NASA is doing (most of their sites are down).

Non-essential does not mean "non-value added".

If government were a man...it would be the fattest, smelliest, unshaven, couch potatoe, incoherent, person on the planet. The government is bloated. It needs to be cut in half.

Lake Powell is closed. Millions of people visit the lake every year. If somehow the shutdown weren't fixed at my next houseboat vacation next summer, you can bet I would be freaking out. And the Grand Canyon is just around the corner from that.

I live in an area with multiple other national parks nearby. The sudden drop in tourism is hurting a lot of our locals who depend on it to fill the hotels, restaurants and such. So the shutdown does affect quite a few hard working Americans. We have some beautiful state parks too, so some of the people's vacations are not entirely ruined, but many are canceling.

Since the OP got his answer, I feel OK about totally digressing....If the republicans would just.....never mind I ain't gonna go there.

Park Rangers closed all of the public ramps and parks on Lake Lanier in Georgia. They put garbage backs over the pay slot boxes with a sign saying the parks were closed due to the government shut down. Wifey and I went Friday and the parking lot was better than half full with trailers, which is pretty busy for this time of year. Even if the ramps get locked up, we still have access to a marina with a ramp and there are several pay launches, so no big deal.
