You will have FAR fewer fumes with an FAE + !CATS than CATS alone. I'm willing to bet the fumes with !CATS + STE tips are similar to CATS and standard flappers. I surf with the STE and don't really notice much in the fumes department.

OK. There are some terms I have not seen before

What is FAE and STE?

Man. I lose my boat and I'm all messed up :)

Here's a question. Since so many of us have motors with CATS now how long before we should be replacing them? If they eventually need to be replaced does that mean you have to buy a whole new exhaust manifold or can you just buy a catalytic converter that inserts into the exhaust manifold?

This would make a difference I think since buying the manifolds are $1000 a piece.

Good news! I filed a claim with my insurance after I got some clarification from my mechanic. He was perplexed why the cats failed. There had to be an explanation. He consulted some engine specialists and he came to a conclusion.

The water intake got obstructed by some foreign matter. This stopped water from circulating in the engine. The engine temp went up and heated up the cats.(This coincides with the 190-200 temp I saw on the gauge when the problem happened). The heated cats blew out and clogged the muffler/silencer can. Instant back pressure and an already hot engine and KA-BLEWEEY! No warnings from the gauges prior to the incident. Once I throttled back and came to a stop, the obstruction floated away from the intake. Again, coincides with the engine temp going back down to 160 deg after I started the engine.

I had remembered that the day before, not more than 1/4 mile away from where the incident happened, we were wakesurfing. When we were done, I drained all the tanks and bags. We went to a cove, met up with some other friends, and anchored down. After 30 minutes I heard that the starboard rear drain pump was still on and the boat was still listing. I check the piggy back ballast fat sac and saw that it was still full. I disconnected the drain line and water was barely draining out. I removed the adapter fitting and a baby wipe was clogging the drain hole.

I believe I ran across one of those baby wipes floating under water and covered the inlet. My mechanic concurred. I filed the claim right before the 4th of July Holiday. Gave my statement, pictures of the damaged engine and my mechanics explanation of the engine damage. Yesterday, I got confirmation that the insurance company will cover the damage. WooHoo!!! Very expensive repair job, about $10K. I am a very fortunate man. I was looking at $3000 in parts alone to fix it on my own. Now I'm getting a new Indmar Monsoon 340 and two new exhaust manifolds.

I guess I'll give a shout out to the insurance company. THANK YOU SKISAFE!!! Great customer service. We'll see what my rates will be next year. :(
