fogging the engine question

That's what I thought mine did to, no lanyard = no crank.

So you cranked with fuel spraying in an open cylinder? Seems risky, but with spark plugs guess its ok.

Actually I turned the engine by hand. (Easy when the sparks are removed.)

Cranking it, the injectors would have sprayed fuel into the cylinders which would have washed the oil coating from the cylinder walls which would be counter-productive here.

(Another possibility to prevent the injectors from working would be to pull the connectors off each injector.)
