I remember one of the boat maintenance threads from years ago established the idea that the “lift” should be installed with the reservoir up and the piston down. That way the fluid in the reservoir always sits on the seal, which should keep the seal moist and help it last longer. Your photos show them to be installed upside down.

Typically they print right on them saying which end is up.  Pretty sure they are gas though.

I saw that on the various sites; the only reason it looks that way is that the barrel broke off when whatever it was bent the shaft which would otherwise be down ☺

I'm trying to visualize needing 2 for the "forward cubby"???

I don't - but I'll want whichever is the strongest, and as both are likely relatively old (mebbe original), having the other as spare in case of the first aging out is prudent ☺

(The only good one of the aft is the port cubby...)

      Yup, that'll do it.

All the lifts other than the glove compartment are the same on our boats, and the Amazon offer is for a pair; I'll get 4 (engine takes 2 and the aft storage one each) and save the best of the 2 remaining ones for the forward cubby.  Glove compartment seemed OK when I surveyed the boat but I won't have that in hand again for a couple of weeks so will delay ordering until I can do all at the same time.

      Y'all are the best!
